Spindles

Post by 1,8t » 12 Apr 2021, 12:54

Hello guys
Can someone please confirm that the Miata spindles are the same from 90 - 97? Or is there any differences except from ABS or not. And also, does it matter in a Midlana build if the spindles would come with ABS or not.
I'm having a discussion with a part dealer in US.

ABS doesn't matter. I believe Kurt cut of the little sensor mount tab from his uprights, but I've left them for now.
I believe 89-97 is NA, and 98-05 is NB. I believe both are the same geometry and mounts. Close enough to work with the "Book" design. It's only NC onwards that drastically changed.

Freaky is correct, you're good with ABS or not, no difference other than the ring. I did cut off the mount for the sensor, but later wished that I'd left it on (if you have any thoughts of doing traction control).

Regarding geometry differences between NA and NB, I honestly never found the answer to that, and once the design was set on the NA parts, I stopped searching. It would be very helpful to know, though, since NA bits will eventually fade away, and we'll have no choice but to move forward.

I have handeld this in a Miata forum on Facebook and the answer i got is that the uprights are the same but top mounting for wishbone is different. I guess that means a different geometry and that we are stuck with NA.

Kurt, did you ever think about making a new calculation involving the NB spindels/uprights?
I would happely pay for a update that would give me the gemetry for NB. Many others too i belive.
Think about it my friend!

What I need is the distance between the top and bottom rotation centers, and the side-to-side offset. I'd compare that with the NA spindle, and if it's close, an NB is good to go as-is. If the top bearing type is different, it's just a matter of adapting the appropriate bearing to it. As the design is now, the top taper hole in the spindle is drilled out to a 0.50" diameter, and a bolt connects it to a spherical bearing. The same could probably be done with the NB spindle, though I've never seen one.

Honestly, it's probably faster for you to just find NA spindles, and this side project can happen at a slower pace.

Yes, we have a good working solution and as you say it'll be quicker to stay with NA. I was looking at my situation were its hard to find parts at reasonable price and also i was thinking about the Midlana future, your book and your possibilities of making some money the next 2 decades.

Agree, I was just thinking about your project in particular. Either I need detailed dimensions of an NB spindle, or it might be better to just buy one.

I will wait a little moore and see what comes in my way.
Best scenario would be a complete scrap car, but they are very rare here in Sweden.

And also it start to look like the NA:s are about to reach some kind of veteran status and that pushes the prices way up.
