Top speed calculator

Postby Midlana1 » 16 Sep 2013, 14:45

This calculator is fun to play with, though who knows how accurate it is http://www.wallaceracing.com/Calculate%20HP%20For%20Speed.php

If we assume 0.6* Cd, 17** sq. ft. cross-section, 1800 lbs, and 180 mph, it says I need 406 whp, which seems low. If I want to reach the perverbial 200 mph club, that would take 557 whp, 151 hp for 20 more mph...

* guess based upon an Atom, with a claimed top speed of 155 mph and with 300 hp. Figuring backwards that's a Cd of about 0.6. (keep in mind that top speed uses wheel horsepower in the math and not power at the crank).

** Counting tires, Midlana is about 6 ft wide. Total height is about 3.5 ft, or 21 sq ft, then subtract out about 2 sq. ft. per side for the empty areas above the tires and outboard of the body.

Now as to whether I'd actually ever try to drive that fast is another matter.
