Best way to hoist a K series engine?

Which drivetrain to choose, so many choices, 4-cyl? 6-cyl? NA? Turbo?

Best way to hoist a K series engine?

Postby Ed Evans » 02 Aug 2017, 06:13

I'm not finding a great resource for the best way to hoist a Honda K series engine. Maybe I'm over thinking it.

For those of you that used a K series, how did you do it?
Any special considerations for a midlana engine compartment?

Check out a stock K-series engine - they already have lifting ears on the transmission and cylinder head. Just so you know, the lateral CG is right about where cylinder #4 is, though due to the offset weight of the transmission, the engine will want to lean toward the axle side. For that reason you'll have to play around with the attachment points a bit - and definitely use one of those load-leveling screw-adjuster things made for hoists.

The other option is to use those large lifting straps - just loop them around the entire drivetrain.

The only other Midlana-related thing is - as is noted in the book - is getting the drivetrain up and over the rear engine crossbar, it has to go pretty high to clear it, so keep the lifting chains short.

Well, good and bad then. I have a stock K series (K24A2 from an '07 TSX) but it is literally just the engine. No tranny or other bits, including perhaps the lifting ear. Is it a bolt-on part? Does anyone have a picture of said lifting ear?

Yes it's just a bolt on looped bracket.

My Acura engine service manual is oddly silent about the size of bolts used to attach the lifting ears to the K24 engine.
It simply has "Fig. 16: Attaching A Chain Hoist To The Engine" with nice zoomed-in images of the lifting ears.

Does anyone happen to know what to use? Just 12 x 1.25mm?

That sounds right. It works fine but I agree it looks small!

An 8.8 grade M12 has a single shear strength of 60kN...so it should be good.

The Alfa V6 I'm using has a couple of lifting tags each held on with an M10 bolt.
