The inner tie rod "arm" is machined. Hence the material wasn't chosen for its weldability, but most likely for its machinability. With that comes some potential gotchas when welding to it.

I'm not talking about it being bad to weld on a tightly toleranced machined surface such as a thread - that's a whole 'nother discussion. Just the simple fact of welding to an alloy that MAY not be very weldable.

Understood, fair point. I guess I took a chance without thinking that through but the arm welded as easily as mild steel.
