Wider chassis

Postby J Hornell » 22 Oct 2016, 08:37

If the passenger bay is widened, and the engine bay is widened to match, does the rear suspension subframe get widened as well? Or does wheel offset take care of any interference concerns?

I have a question about a wider chassis.
I am 6 foot 1 inch tall and about 240 lbs on a good day.
As I am just now drawing lines and have not cut tubing yet should I widen/lengthen the frame to accommodate me?
I don't want to get into the build and have it be too tight of a squeeze.
Thanks Dave

Height-wise you'll be fine, width, yeah well... Get the seats (or at least the driver's side) early and put it on the build table and see what it'll take to build around it. It's possible to widen the car, leaving the pickup points where they are, or say "screw it" and literally widen the car right down the center. The issue with that is that the roll centers will move some, but no big deal, and also the steering rack will no longer be the right length and will likely introduce bumpsteer that will have to be dealt with. Overall that may not be as hard as trying to retain the inboard pickup points. Then there's also the aesthetic aspect of widening the chassis, where if the nose cone is used unmodified, it might look a little odd. Whether that's a thing or not is up to you.

I decided to widen my chassis by four inches in the back and keep the front the same. I also stretched it four inches.
