KV Catfish nose cone boxed size and weight

Postby mitchmk3 » 18 May 2016, 19:28

Hi everyone,

I have been in touch with Jack at Kinetic Vehicles about ordering a couple of catfish noses. The catch is that myself and Freakynami are in Australia.

Can anyone tell me what size and weight a boxed Catfish nose is? Additionally can anyone tell me what weight the nosecone is by itself?

If I can get a hold of the above I can start getting some quotes for getting a nose from Oregon to downunder.

Thanks,
Mitch

Jack will know that off the top of his head. As I recall, the issue isn't the weight (it's well under 10 lbs) but the size that drives up the shipping cost.

I asked Jack back in January 2015 and this was his answer:

Hi there,
I am building a Midlana in South Australia, and was wondering if you would be able to ship a nose all the way over here?
I would like to know shipping cost?
I would like to know if you've any experience shipping to Australia (or anywhere long distance) and had any damaged parts?
Thanks,
André

Hi Andre,
Gulp. I don’t know how. If you can direct me to a freight forwarder in the US (or just a friend of yours in the US who is hip to how these things are done) I’ll do what you tell me, but I’ve no experience to guide me.
Not much trouble there, never a damaged nose or scuttle, however the Midlana/Catfish nose is awfully light compared to its volume, and if you have any smattering of fiberglassing skill it would probably be worth the hassle to have us cut it in half and send it as a nested pair in a -roughly-half-as-big-as-usual box or dimensional weight will hit you hard. It normally goes in a 28 x 24 x 16 inch box.
Regards, Jack

Having it cut in half is no problem to me at all, I'll be widening it and possibly changing the taper slightly depending on how my wider chassis looks. I'm a little way off but reworking still seems easier than making a mold from scratch....

Also just checked the internets for freight forwarders, there is a place called myus.com that seems to only worry about the weight - wild arse guess at 20kg all up to Aus they quote $400 but I don't understand how their membership etc. works...

And if there are several of you guys seriously planning to build, shipping them all in one box would cut shipping costs tremendously.

So Kurt do you think that a 28 x 24 x 16 box with two nose cones would come in under 30lbs? I was certainly thinking that splitting the shipping cost would make it more viable.

Considering that I have zero fibreglassing skills I would need to get someone to rejoin a split nose cone for me.

Pretty sure, but confirm with Jack. You guys should seriously consider combined shipping.

Doesn't look like freight will be cheap. Having done a few quick online quotes the best I have got so far is about $540US

Try to find a way to have it shipped by boat. Much slower but it has to be cheaper.

Thinking outside the box, does anyone there already make and sell a Lotus Seven type nose?

I'm finding it hard to get an instant online quote for sea freight.

Any suggestions?

New Zealand has more than a few Lotus 7 replica builders (Fraser & McGregor to name a few); perhaps they can provide & ship at a lower cost.

http://www.fraser.co.nz/
http://www.mcgregormotorsport.co.nz/, site is currently under construction but they can be contacted.
